¡El español llega a la escuela primaria!

Students from grades 1-5 are now exploring the world of Spanish

The Approach

In our classes we speak Spanish A LOT! In fact we speak English as little as possible. It might sound a bit scary and there are definitely bumps along the way, but students are building their ability to communicate in Spanish in a multitude of ways. Through student-teacher and peer-to-peer activities and exposure to music and text, students are able to express increasingly complex ideas in Spanish. Within one week, every student in the class has spoken, read and written in Spanish. Así será nuestro camino...This is the path we plan to follow.

Vocabulario de la escuela

Click below for a vocabulary powerpoint on classroom materials. The final slide has many images that when clicked, model correct pronunciation of the vocabulary words. Think of fun ways to make a game of it, such as yo busco... (I spy)

Proyecto autobiográfico: We are starting a new autobiography project that will allow students to integrate new and old vocabulary. Try out these flashcards to help your son or daughter learn all the new words.

La canción de la papa

You might have heard your son or daughter singing some crazy song about the days of the week and potatoes. Here are the lyrics if you want to sing along. LA PAPA.doc

You can do these activities NOW.

To start, here are some of the basic adjectives we are learning in this unit.

Preferencias - students are learning to express likes and dislikes in Spanish. There is a pretty large set of new vocabulary to go with this mini-unit. You can use the two documents that follow to practice.

Homework Helper: fin de agosto

Here is an answer key (in Powerpoint form) to accompany homework that goes home with students in the coming week and a half. You can use it to guide you in a realistic dialogue exchange. To be successful, students should be able to say who they are (pretending to be various characters), and who they are not. You can work with a printed hard copy of this presentation, or use the computer, which will allow for hidden / revealed answers.

Flashcard Central: Vocabulary Practice

Click on the link below to open a printable set of vocabulary picture cards. This current series deals with some useful verbs that we like to do (using the verb gustar), sports and foods.

Me gusta el español. This is a slideshow you can use to practice expressing like and dislike. There is a lot of useful vocabulary. Me gusta show.notebook

To make flash cards: Print the word and picture slides. The words and pictures will match up if you paste the sheets back-to-back (I recommend a glue stick), and cut.

To make memory game cards: Print the word and picture slides. Print the textured pattern slide- paste one copy of the pattern slide as a no see-through backing for each picture and word sheet. Although I love double-sided printing to save paper, this low-tech method creates a nicer card. Cut and play!

Try this interview with your son or daughter. You will need Smart Notebook (available through a free download at http://www2.smarttech.com/st/en-us/support). Of course, the link is troublesome. Follow it and then go to SUPPORT. After SUPPORT choose SMART BOARD SOFTWARE.

Los días de la semana: You can use this powerpoint wheel to scroll through the days of the week. Very soon your son or daughter should be able to sing or chant through the days.

¿Cómo estás hoy? It's one of the basic questions in Spanish, but students should be prepared to specify beyond the three basic responses (Yo estoy bien, Yo estoy más o menos, Yo estoy mal) with these six additional possibilities, for starters. Try using this Powerpoint to print out flashcards or a memory game.

Common classroom expressions This vocabulary is used in nearly every class period. Getting familiar with it is fundamental for boosting confidence with Spanish. Many of these structures are easily adapted (with new vocabulary) to use in many different situations.
